Tony, VK3TZ got into contesting seriously in 1992, although he had previously dabbled with some minor operations in 1989 and as a novice in 1984. Primarily Tony was interested in DXing and achieving the "holy grail" of confirming all current DXCC entities. Now in 2013, having now achieved that Holy Grail with all 340 DXCC confirmed on phone, Tony is concentrating on 9BDXCC with only 160m left to conquer and improving the current DXCC Slot count over 2000.
Contesting was an easy way to work new entities and to improve operating skills and the performance of the station. Early contests were run with a very simple antenna and only an 8m tower. For the first 2 years Tony only operated contests on 10m, having outstanding fun working new band countries and unusual paths. Working FM5, 6Y5 and other Caribbean DX long path on 10m at 2.00am local time was an enormous thrill. Finally cracking the pile-up over the top of the Europeans - or more to the point thru them, was exhilarating, but not really contesting.
